As with most sex work, webcamming doesn’t hold the best reputation. It’s often viewed as exploitation or perhaps a last-resort hustle to pay off debt, but Reed Amber, 26, explains how webcam models are merely your average self-employed freelancers with similar level of agency and independence as anyone else.
Model, producer and co-creator of YouTube channel ComeCurious, Reed it’s essentially the physical embodiment of sex positivity, which she defines as “trying to make people think that what they’re doing as well as what they’re into isn’t wrong, it’s normal and it’s absolutely fine.” She’s a tremendous advocate for removing stigma and taboos around sex, and that we trapped together with her to explore webcamming, a distinct sex work that is seldom mentioned.
Exactly why do you think that some men, and possibly women at the same time, prefer it to porn?
“There’s so much free porn that I feel webcamming is a lot more of your personal one-on-one. You are able to search online in order to find any ol’ stuff, but webcamming is a lot more personal; it’s tailored exactly as to what you need as well as what you’re searching for. You’re not sharing it with 100 thousand other people. Here is your show. Usually you build up a relationship, I speak with you like a friend and i also respect you as a person. ‘How has your day been, what do you get from the shops, what are you cooking for dinner…’ it’s such as an online relationship”
…So it’s similar to the ‘girlfriend experience’?
“Yes, it’s like the girlfriend experience. But that also is determined by just what the webcam model is like and also exactly what the person paying is a lot like because everybody wants something more important.”
Maybe you have had avoid a request?
“I’m one in the cam girls who does seldom decline. I’ve always wanted to try new things, but that’s not since i felt like I needed to. It’s just personally what I need to do. I would like to tick stuff off my list, I would like to try everything once especially when you are looking for sex positivity. Regardless of whether it’s something I’m not really into, I’d still give it a try. Basically didn’t enjoy it, I’d end up like ‘sorry, I’m not really into that.’ But there’s a number of people that would avoid a lot of stuff.”
Are there any really common requests that you get?
“It depends on the profile which you create because if you come up with a profile, you are writing just a little bio about yourself, and read might be seen as an bit more ‘out there’. I’m offered to anything, like roleplay, so many of the time I recieve roleplay requests, more simply because I’ve found them fun regardless how unusual or bizarre they’re. What excites me are uncommon and unusual requests which you wouldn’t really run into. Life’s too boring otherwise”
How does someone react whenever you let them know everything you do?
“I obtain a mix of emotions. Mostly people react positively because of the way I speak about it. It’s so different if you’re really shy and timid and quiet regarding it. It immediately produces this idea of ‘oh they’re not completely comfortable with it.’
Basically you are free to turn out to be sex-positive self on your full potential…
“Exactly! That’s where I received my first taste of sex positivity. Experiencing my relationships and going to university I was like ‘woah, nobody thinks generate an income do, I’ve got to be weird’. But being a webcam model, I realised most people are into something else entirely, they simply seem like they can’t discuss it.”
